My Simternship & Book Experience

Image
Simternship. The assignment of the semester for our Principles of Social Media class. Essentially it's exactly like it sounds. This assignment took place on our online textbook platform, Stukent. We got to simulate an actual internship or job in the field of social media. In the simternship, we ran social media posts, projects, and campaigns for a company called Buhi Bags.      I did however expect to be super good and I thought that I would kill the simternship. I definitely thought wrong. It took me a while to get the hang of how I should be doing business and figure out the best ways to post. I did finally get the hang of it maybe 6 or 7 rounds in. The system was harder than I thought and opened my eyes to my future career.      Nobody enjoys a textbook. They tend to be wordy and have small fonts; carrying it arou nd is a pain. Our textbook  Essentials of Social Media Marketing was anything...

Netflix's The Social Dilemma

Image
The past week in class we watched Netflix's documentary The Social Dilemma which was written and directed by Jeff Orlowski and produced by Larissa Rhodes. I saw this film before back when I was taking journalism in high school when this film was first released. I never thought much about the film when I watched it the first time which I'm sure because it was covid times. But I was excited to watch it again for this class. Although I missed about the first 20 minutes it was easy to catch up on what was happening.     The first scene I saw was very one of the infamous conversations during the family dinner. During this scene and honestly through what I saw in this movie/docu-series which played out very dramatically. I am not saying it wasn't realistic because those issues around screens and being addicted to them do happen but not to that extreme I feel.      Now I'm not the type to sit through a documentary and sta...

Chapter #11: Time Consuming TikTok

Image
Chapter #11:  TikTok       TikTok. I'm sure everyone reading this knows what TikTok is and how it works. A short explanation of what Tiktok is which is a short-form video content platform with a section for following and a for you page where the algorithm works to tailor videos to fit each individual.      I am sure you've all fallen victim to the TikTok rabbit hole or spiral. TikTok has a continuously active feed that keeps you scrolling for hours. The continuous feed is what keeps the platform so addictive.       TikTok has endless options to show your creativity and express yourself. Titok has the ability to now share up to ten minutes of video. It has been the fastest-growing social media platform globally, the most downloaded app from 2019-2023.      As for statistics, there are over 1 billion listeners. The largest age group on Tiktok is the 18-24 range with the male to female ratio being nearly even...

Chapter #10: Youth and Youtube

Image
Chapter #10: Youth and Youtube YouTube is an easy way to share videos on this platform of content. YouTube was founded way back in 2006 that's 18 years ago. Some demographics of YouTube are 54.2% of male usage compared to 45.8% of female usage. This is one of the closest ranges on social media platforms. On average 1 billion hours are watched on YouTube each day. Something that made sense to me was that 70% of YouTube usage is used on mobile devices.      Personally, I do notice that I use YouTube more on my phone than TV or laptop. I am not sure if this is due to my family using YouTube Music vs Spotify or Apple Music, but I generally use YouTube on my phone.      There are also many sub-brands and more parts to YouTube including YouTube Music and YouTube TV. I know each of these sub-brands has perks. For example with YouTube TV, you can access certain cable channels and exclusive streams plus get ad-free videos.      I d...

Chapter #9: LinkedIn is Key

Image
Chapter #9: Linkedin       I had never used LinkedIn until last week when I set up an account, after attending the Woman in Buinessness conference in Columbus last Wednesday put on by Ohio Northern's chapter of PRSSA.  I knew that I finally had to make an account after meeting with several professionals and soon hoping to get an Internship.      LinkedIn is the most used professional social media platform. It ranks in the top 20 at 18th most used social media  I really enjoyed this chapter because I got to learn about LinkedIn which I knew the least about out of several social media platforms we've learned about so far.       Numbers only a slightly higher amount of men are on LinkedIn compared to women with a percentage of 57% to 43% and the largest age group using LinkedIn is in the 25-34 range. Something about LinkedIn I never thought of would be what other countries use it and how much compared to the United States. ...

Chapter #8: Pinterest Inspiration

Image
Chapter #8: Pinterest     What is Pinterest?  Pinterest is essentially a digital bulletin board. You can pin anything to any type of board that you can title and categorize how you want. I know that I have been using Pinterest for as long as I can remember. I remember that my mom and I would use to plan fun birthday parties for Ruby and me. I eventually created my own account probably around the time I started middle school. I've used Pinterest on and off for several years. I have used Pinterest for DIYs, arts/crafts, and my baking phase when I was in middle school. I also frequently used Pinterest when prepping for college to see ways to save storage and decorate my future dorm room.      The demographics of Pinterest were very interesting to see. I figured that app was going to mostly women users but I was surprised when I saw the number. The percentage of women using Pinterest in 2023 was 76.2% compared to men at 17.2%. Another stat that didn't surprise ...

Chapter #7: Silly Snapchat

Image
Chapter #7:      Snapchat is widely known especially among Generation Z. It is rare if someone around my age doesn't use Snapchat. Snapchat is a photo messaging app where you can send photos back and forth with friends and family or post them to your story for your followers to see what you may be up to. In the graph shown in the book, it shows that from the 1st quarter of 2024 to the 1st quarter of 2022 the number of active daily users has had a steady increase each quarter of the year.     Within the statistics of Snapchat, the most used age is what I expected which ranges from 18 to 24. But the users of men and women are almost the same which is rare for almost the same amount which is 51% of females to 49% of males. When looking at the other stats I was surprised to see the amount of users in each country and how India surpasses the United States. I also found that on Advererage the typical Snapchat user only spends about 21 minutes a day on Snapchat an aver...

Chapter #6: Twitter... I mean X

Image
Chapter #6:     X is more commonly known as its former name Twitter whereas X was created by Elon Musk after he bought Twitter back in July of 2023. I know that it is popular but I haven't even opened the app since I was told to download it in my high school journalism class.      X allows users to share a post with less than 280 characters and images if they choose to do so. Today X has over 368 million monthly users that send over 6,000 posts every second. X's original purpose was for friends to communicate. Now it is a worldwide social networking site. People go to X now for daily news, sports, and politics.       Marketing with X is key. It allows the brand or company to have a voice and gives them the opportunity to engage with customers and followers more easily compared to other platforms.       I nfluencers are a major part of marketing in 2024. Even on X, they use influencers for marketing and advertising.   ...

Chapter #5: Instent Instagram

Image
Chapter #5:       Instagram is by far my favorite social media platform. It is what made me realize I want to study social media. I love all the cool features that they have to offer. Like stories and the ability to highlight them, reels, and tagging. I know I will get caught in the Instagram rabbit hole often and not even realize it.       I first made an Instagram account back when Instagram first started to pop up at the ripe age of ten. I know that I really had no business being on Instagram in 3rd grade given that I literally was posting photoshoots of my American Girl Dolls. My mom didn't even really understand that I shouldn't have been on Instagram because social media was so new and a foreign concept to most. If I remember correctly she didn't even make an account until a while after I did.     I now realize that since I got Instagram when I was so young that was not the normal then but certainly is now. My younger cousin ...

Chapter #4: Facebook Fun

Image
Chapter #4:     I don't know about you all but my mom and grandma have been chronicling everything about my sister Ruby and I growing up by making a Facebook post just anything about either of us would do especially when we were younger. There are probably HUNDREDS of awful Facebook photos of us between both of them.      I know that out of all my social media knowledge, Facebook is the one I know the least about. If I were to make assumptions about Facebook like most it would be stereotypically labeled as for moms or parent-aged individuals.      This is actually not the case though. Facebook is actually the most used social media and is most popular with the demographic ages 25-34. Facebook actually has more males than females. At 14% more males than females, it is something I would never have guessed.          Facebook is probably one of the more user-friendly social med...

Chapter #3: Social Media Marketing & Advertising

Image
Chapter #3     In Chapter 3 of our book, it covers all about  Social Media Marketing & Advertising. When using Social Media Marketing to advertise there are ten key steps to use. We discussed steps one through five in class, so I will be discussing steps six through ten.       In step six the goal is to simply pick or select the chosen platform for the advertising. From Instagram to Facebook to Snapchat to Pinterest to Linked In there are several platforms that create content. There is a purpose and goal to choose the right platform for your chosen content that will be released. Each platform reaches a different audience and has its own language.      Step seven is to create and optimize social media networks. To create and optimize social media you should really fill the social media account with everything. From profile pictures, bios, links, consistent posting, and things you may not think about like creating usernames or adding a...
